According to White Plains Public Safety, police responded to Target at 9 City Pl on Wednesday, March 12, at 7:12 p.m., after store employees reported a shoplifting incident.

Officers arrested a 58-year-old man from the Bronx, who was accused of stealing more than $250 worth of merchandise. However, when police attempted to take him into custody, the suspect, whose name was not released, allegedly resisted arrest.

To subdue him, officers used Oleoresin Capsicum spray, commonly known as pepper spray.

During the arrest, a youth bystander in the vicinity was affected by the spray, police confirmed.

EMS evaluated the youth, who was then released into the care of a parent. Authorities did not specify the extent of the youth’s exposure or whether medical treatment was required.

Following the incident, misinformation about the arrest and the bystander’s involvement began spreading on social media, according to authorities.

"We encourage the public to rely on verified information and official sources regarding this incident," the department said in a social media post on Thursday, March 13.
